Hamburg North

The north of Hamburg is a diverse and green region. It is home to the largest forest areas, such as the Duvenstedter Brook and Wohldorfer Wald nature reserves. The Alster river, which winds its way from Duvenstedt to Winterhude, is particularly charming and is a little paradise for hikers and cyclists. Children can let off steam at the Schemmannstraße adventure playground or explore the Niendorfer Gehege with its deer enclosure. Discover other special destinations for families and day trippers, whether on foot, by bike, with your dog or in a wheelchair. Have fun exploring!

Anyone who thinks you can't go hiking in Hamburg is sorely mistaken. The north of the city, in particular, boasts many beautiful hiking trails that wind through nature, taking you far away from the hustle and bustle of the streets and city.

Ausflüge um Hamburg Landschaftsache Eimsbüttel

Lanschaftsachse Eimsbüttel

The "Eimsbüttel Landschaftsachse" is an older network of hiking trails in Hamburg that has been recently remarked with milestones. However, clear signage is lacking. The trail leads through beautiful parks and quiet spots for relaxation. It is recommended for both hiking and cycling. The starting point is Planten un Blomen, from where it leads through Sternschanzenpark, along the Isebek Canal, through Eimsbüttel City Park, past Hagenbeck Zoo, through the Stellinger Schweiz (Stellingen Switzerland) and the Niendorfer Gehege. The trail ends at the street "Zum Niendorfer Grenzhaus" (To the Niendorf Border House). The 15-kilometer trail passes numerous playgrounds and dog parks; hikers should bring their own food and drinks.

Ausflüge in Hamburg 2. Grüner Ring Hamburg Route 11 Mann auf dem Fahrrad fährt über eine lange Brücke über die Elbe

2. Green Ring Hamburg

The Hamburg Green Ring is a route around the city that is approximately 100 kilometres long and passes through parks, nature reserves and green spaces. The route offers a variety of landscapes and sights, such as orchards, dykes, forests and lakes. Cyclists and hikers can discover the green side of Hamburg on the signposted ‘Route 11’. A bike tour takes about 9 hours and includes a ferry crossing in Teufelsbrück. The signage is good, but it is advisable to download the map in advance from hamburg.de. Food should be taken along, as there are only a few places to stop for refreshments along the route. Every year in spring, the Green Ring becomes a popular hiking route during the Megamarsch.

Ausflüge um Hamburg Umrundung Hamburger Flughafen Wandern Hamburg Radtour Weg mit Bahn und Blick auf den Hamburger Flughafen

Circumnavigation of Hamburg Airport

Hamburg Airport can be circumnavigated on foot or by bicycle along a 16-kilometre hiking trail. The route runs along the airport fence, through the Krohnstiegtunnel, along the Tarpenbek and through gardens and forests. Some spots offer excellent views of the airport runway. The trail is ideal for nature and aircraft enthusiasts, as well as runners and families. The café ‘Coffee to Fly’ is located on the circular trail.

Ausflüge um Hamburg Kollauwanderweg Radtour Wanderweg Hamburg Wanderweg neben der Kollau drumherum Bäume und grün

Kollauwanderweg

The approximately 8-kilometre-long Kollauwanderweg trail in Hamburg Niendorf offers a relaxing route along the Kollau river and through green landscapes. The trail is suitable for walks, bike rides and wheelchair trips and runs partly along the Hamburg Green Ring. Dogs must be kept on a leash all year round. The hiking trail starts at the Vielohwisch playground (alternatively on Vielohweg) and ends at the Pulvermühle mill in Tarpenbek.

Ausflüge um Hamburg Alsterwanderweg Radtour Wanderweg Hamburg Wanderweg an der Alster mit Rettungsring am Geländer

Alsterwanderweg

The Alsterwanderweg in Hamburg stretches over 32.5 kilometres from Kayhude to the Außenalster, passing green landscapes and sights such as the Alsterschlösschen and the Wellingsbüttler Torhaus. The trail offers plenty of peace and quiet along the northernmost stretch of the Alster and the opportunity to go canoeing. The Alsterwanderweg is also very dog-friendly, with several dog walking areas to be found here. The signage in the first section near Tangstedt/Duvenstedt could be improved, so Google Maps can be helpful. From Rodenbeker Quellental, the trail then runs along the Alster. The trail is also suitable for cycling tours, but some smaller sections are not necessarily passable (due to excessive gradients). There are places to stop for refreshments in Rodenbeker Quellental and Ohlsdorf.

Ausflüge in Hamburg Tarpenbek Wanderweg durchs Grün und ein Baum mit einem eingeschnitzten lächelnden Gesicht

Tarpenbekwanderweg

The Tarpenbek rises in Norderstedt (near the ARRIBA water park) and flows through various districts of Hamburg to the Eppendorfer Mühlenteich. The approximately 10-kilometre-long hiking trail is mostly easily accessible, but cyclists in the Tarpen area have to take a detour through the allotments. The path is very suitable for wheelchair users on the Norderstedt - Tarpen section and in the airport area. The Tarpenbek river passes under the airport twice. In Niendorf, the Kollau flows into the Tarpenbek before the river flows into the Eppendorfer Mühlenteich and then into the Alster. The route is almost entirely surrounded by nature, so there are hardly any places to stop for refreshments. The path passes several dog walking areas and playgrounds.

Ausflüge in Hamburg Wanderroute 2 Aktivregion Alsterland Wanderrunde Blick auf die Beschilderung am Wanderweg

Hiking route no. 2 "Hiking circuit between the moors"

The "Between the Moors" hiking trail in the Alsterland Active Region leads through the Wittmoor and the Tangstedt Forest. At approximately 10.3 kilometers long, the circular route is ideal for hiking or cycling. The trail is well-marked with a yellow arrow (and the number 2). We recommend bringing your own food and drinks, as there are no places to stop for refreshments along the way. Dogs are welcome on a leash. The trail connects northern Hamburg with the districts of Stormarn and Segeberg.

Ausflüge um Hamburg Wanderroute 17 Aktiv Region Alsterland Blick auf einen schmalen Wanderweg neben einem Rapsfeld

Alsterland Wanderroute Nr. 17 "durch Brook, Wald und Auen"

The 15.8-kilometre circular hiking trail No. 17 in the Alsterland active region is one of the most beautiful circular trails. It leads through the Ammersbek lowlands, the Wohldorfer Wald forest, the Duvenstedter Brook (PLEASE NOTE: dogs are not allowed here all year round) and the Hansdorfer Brook. Along the way, you will pass beautiful flower meadows, lush forests, moorland and heathland, and quaint bridges. You will mostly be on your own, accompanied only by birdsong and the occasional aeroplane. Between September and October, you will need to follow a signposted alternative route due to the rutting season in the Duvenstedter Forest. The route is well signposted, but from Hansdorfer Brook to Hoisbüttel, some markings may be missing or difficult to see. Please pay extra attention here! You can leave your car at the forest car park in Hoisbüttel. The circular hiking trail is also ideal for a bike ride.

The Streubar zero-waste shop is located near the Barmbek S-Bahn and U-Bahn station. It offers over 1,000 unpackaged products. Streubar is reminiscent of a nostalgic old-fashioned shop. Almost all products are plastic-free and regional suppliers are given preference. What makes it special is that you can fill up exactly the amount you need without having to comply with a minimum filling quantity.

A special tip from Malte: when filling and transporting, it is better to use bags (e.g. old bread and roll bags) as these take up less space and are lighter than jars. At home, the food can then be transferred to containers.

Streubar regularly offers workshops for all age groups, and it is also possible to take a look behind the scenes by arrangement. Nurseries and schools can take a free guided tour of the shop and warehouse after registering. But Streubar is also ideal for a quick coffee break. The Hummelsbüttel Moors nature reserve consists of two small bogs, the Hüsermoor and the Ohlkuhlenmoor. These small bogs were initially designated as natural monuments, but were combined to form a nature reserve in 2008. A paved, accessible hiking trail leads through both bogs. The bogs were completely fenced off because the natural environment had been damaged by arson and littering. The fencing allowed the natural environment to recover, and deer, hares, grey herons, wild geese, and many bird species were able to resettle there. With luck, you might even hear the call of the corncrake. If you'd like to hike around the bog area with children, you'll pass Tegelsbarg, where you'll find the large Tegelsbarg playground. Dogs must be kept on a leash on the hiking trail year-round.

Today, the greened "Monte Müll" (Mount Garbage) is the highest point in the Wandsbek district and serves as a local recreation area. On a clear day, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Hamburg. The landfill is definitely worth a visit at any time of year and is perfect for relaxing walks. Hummelsee, located at the foot of the landfill, invites you to linger afterward. A lovely playground is located in the green space near Kriegerdankweg, the so-called Pirate Playground or simply Kriegerdankweg Playground. Numerous climbing structures for children of all ages, along with two giant slides, ensure an exciting pirate adventure. There's a separate play area for toddlers. The zip line was a constant hit with us. The water and mud play area is very popular during the summer months, and it can get quite crowded then. In fact, the playground (like almost all playgrounds in Hamburg) could really use a fresh coat of paint. The paint on some of the equipment is badly faded or missing altogether. A few more benches would also be great (bring a picnic blanket in the summer). If you're in the mood for playground hopping, you can then discover another small playground in the green space diagonally opposite, towards Von-Herslo-Weg. There you'll find swings, seesaws, and a soccer field.

Besides guinea pigs, rabbits, goats, sheep, and goldfish, the farm is also home to African grey parrots, a three-keeled turtle, clawed frogs, and many other animals. The Amazon parrots are particularly gifted singers. A visit is definitely worthwhile, and with luck, you might even get to help with feeding. Many of the animals come from the local animal shelter and find their forever homes here. The animals' food is primarily funded by donations. Hamburg entdecken Appelhoffweiher Steilshoop Blick auf den Weiher im Hintergrund Wald und ein blauer Himmel

 Appelhoffweiher

The Appelhoffweiher pond is one of Steilshoop's most beautiful spots. Just 50 years ago, countless apple trees grew here; the area belonged to an apple orchard. The pond, created by damming the Seebek stream, was only formed in 1973. The small island that emerged was formerly the farm's meadow and is now a refuge for many water birds. Several exercise machines are located around the pond. The large playground offers a zip line, climbing frame, playhouses, slide, and trampoline, as well as a large soccer field, a large basketball court with an integrated smaller soccer field and an additional goal. There is also a ping-pong table, a giant chessboard, and a large beach volleyball court. Seating areas with tables and two barbecue grills are also available. Naturschutzgebiet Volksdorfer Teichwiesen

The Volksdorfer Teichwiesen nature reserve contains one of Hamburg's last well-preserved tunnel valleys. It was formed during the Ice Age beneath glacial ice by the erosive action of meltwater. What remains is a particularly attractive habitat for flora and fauna. Meadows, pastures, bodies of water, swamp forests, and stands of trees are closely intertwined. Thanks to the damp to boggy subsoil, several endangered plant species, already listed on Hamburg's Red List, have been able to thrive and reproduce. From June onwards, visitors are rewarded with thousands of blooming orchids. Scottish Highland cattle are constantly grazing, maintaining the landscape. The hiking trail around the Volksdorfer Teichwiesen is level and accessible. Dogs must be kept on a leash year-round.
