Longer hiking trails through MV
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is a paradise for hikers and cyclists. Nature invites you to relax and unwind – far from busy roads. You can find the most beautiful hiking trails that cross district borders here.
Plauer See in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is ideal for families, campers, and hikers. A 52-kilometer hiking trail encircles the picturesque lake, generally following the shoreline. Hikers should plan two days for the complete circuit. From Plau am See, you can take a boat to Lenz, and parking is free at the "Parkplatz Ecke B103/Quetziner Straße" parking lot. Boats only depart once a certain number of passengers have arrived, so some patience is required. In Lenz, you can hike back to Plau in two loops. The loop via Lenzer Höhe is approximately 28 kilometers long, and the other route via Jürgensdorf is about 24 kilometers. Both routes offer breathtaking views of the lake, several points of interest, and challenging trails. The loop towards Lenzer Höhe is particularly attractive. A well-marked and excellent cycling route also circumnavigates the lake, which can be completed in a day. This route does not follow the shoreline continuously. A circular bus, which also transports bicycles, regularly travels around the lake.
Towpath along the Stör river in the Lewitz region
The towpath, one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the Lewitz region, runs directly along the Stör Canal. Stretching 13 kilometers, the path begins at the Gaartz Bridge in Waldlewitz and ends at Lake Schwerin in Schwerin-Muess. A slight detour is required in Banzkow, while in Plate, simply follow the canal. From the Gaartz Bridge, you can also quickly reach Friedrichsmoor, home to the legendary Lewitz Forest Adventure Trail, which is especially exciting for children. The towpath is perfect for hiking and cycling. With luck, you might spot a kingfisher, a beaver (whose tracks can be found all along the canal), or a grey heron. The nature trail is generally accessible, becoming paved shortly before Schwerin.
Schwerin
Here are some of the best day trip ideas for the state capital of Schwerin.
The neighboring districts are
Nordwestmecklenburg and
Ludwigslust-Parchim.
Schwerin-Muess
Freilichtmuseum für Volkskunde
The Schwerin-Muess Open-Air Museum is located on a former fishing and farmstead on the southern shore of Lake Schwerin. Most of the buildings on the museum grounds are original structures from the old village center of Muess. Visitors can gain insight into the lives of Mecklenburg's rural population from the 17th to the early 20th century. Interactive exhibits invite visitors to try things out for themselves, and some buildings evoke memories of bygone eras. Our children were particularly impressed by the old school and the historical learning materials. The picturesque village schoolteacher's garden is a lovely place to relax, and the café has a cozy, homey atmosphere. Next to the café is a small playground with a replica of a milking cow. Several animals, such as sheep, chickens, and beehives, also live on the museum grounds. Guided tours, events, workshops, and summer holiday programs are offered regularly at the open-air museum. Every Wednesday during the school holidays, there is a free holiday activity program on the museum grounds. Parking is available, and dogs are allowed on a leash. We recommend leaving the buggy or stroller in the car.
Eis-Manufaktur
Schwerin-Muess
The best ice cream in Schwerin can be found at the Schwerin-Mueß ice cream parlor. This shop is among the best in the country and a must-visit for ice cream lovers. Even if the line is long on nice days, it's worth the wait to enjoy a delicious sundae or creamy soft serve. They also offer special dog ice cream in various flavors. The ice cream parlor is wheelchair accessible, but has limited outdoor seating. From here, you have a good starting point for a walk to Reppin Castle.
Reppiner Burg Schwerin-Muess
The artificial ruin of Reppin Castle lies directly on the southern shore of Lake Schwerin. Built in 1907 by order of the Public Welfare Society, the castle complex was conceived under the motto "an unfinished castle for an unfinished life." It was likely intended as a memorial to the early death of Friedrich Franz II, who drowned in 1897 when his torpedo boat capsized in the North Sea. His father, Friedrich Wilhelm of Mecklenburg, named the site after his son and erected a monument in the form of a boulder in 1899. Today, Reppin Castle can not only be visited, but visitors can also climb the keep free of charge and enjoy the view from the narrow viewing platform. Reppin Castle can only be reached via hiking trails or by boat.
Schwerin-Warnitz
Fussballgolf Schwerin
In Schwerin you can play footgolf, an activity similar to golf where the aim is to kick a football into the target holes. The 18 holes feature various obstacles that must be overcome in creative ways. You'll receive instructions on-site. Allow approximately 1.5 to 2 hours for a complete round. Private parties can also be held on the premises.

You can enjoy a truly relaxing holiday at the Landhotel Lewitz Mühle. This family- and dog-friendly hotel offers a real oasis of well-being in the countryside. The rooms are charmingly and comfortably furnished. The family rooms and apartments are fully equipped to ensure a comfortable holiday with young children (baby cot, child toilet seat, step stool, etc.). Accessible rooms are also available. The hotel grounds include a spacious play area, a playground, a garden, various saunas, and a massage area. The spa area is being expanded this year, so you can look forward to a heated outdoor pool and an enhanced spa facility with a hammam and swimming pool. We particularly recommend the massage area; you'll receive excellent treatment at fair prices. In summer, the large outdoor terrace opens, where you can enjoy a slice of cake while the children play in the play area. The restaurant is located directly in the mill and offers regional, traditional dishes in generous portions. Be sure to try the mill's charcuterie board! Children are provided with art supplies, and there are delicious children's meals available. You can also plan your private celebrations and meetings at the Lewitz Mill. The mill regularly hosts public events and special offers.
Brüel

Erlebnispfad Brüel
On the approximately 2-kilometer-long adventure trail in Brüel, you can explore nature together with Ben the Beaver. Along the way, several information and activity stations await, where your kids can learn new things in a playful way. For example, you can see how far you can jump and how the animals compare in a jump comparison. There's also a great photo station with panoramic views of the landscape, fascinating facts about ants, and a quiz wheel where you can test and expand your knowledge about beetles. The trail is ideal for children from about 5 years old and offers several picnic areas along the way, perfect for a short break in nature. To get to the adventure trail, the best place to park is directly at the old cemetery on Sternberger Straße (opposite Netto). The adventure trail starts right from there.
Daschow
Landhotel Schloss Daschow
Surrounded by sleepy villages, forests, and lakes lies the former hunting lodge of Daschow. The manor house was long owned by the von Hartwig family until they were expropriated during the land reform in 1945. The small castle was subsequently used as a refugee shelter, a consumer goods store, and a holiday home. Today, the Landhotel Schloss Daschow occupies the old manor house. In the Café Seerose, you can relax and enjoy the beautifully renovated rooms with a coffee and a freshly baked cake. The charm of the rooms will transport you directly back to the glory days of the hunting lodge. Surrounded by luxury and history, the prices are somewhat higher. The staff is very attentive and friendly. Anyone who can play the piano is welcome to play the grand piano. A large outdoor terrace and the estate park complete the property. Several events and concerts take place throughout the year.
Floating
Klosterpark des Dobbertiner Kloster
A highlight of Dobbertin Monastery is its park. It feels like stepping into a fairytale: the old trees are covered in ivy, Lake Dobbertin shimmers, ducks sleep on the shore, the forest floor is awash with wildflowers, snails hide among the tree trunks, and Indian Runner ducks waddle quacking through the grass. The park features small woodland playgrounds, swimming spots, and even a designated dog bathing area. Those with a little extra time can stroll along the art trail by the lake, where various wooden sculptures await discovery. The trail culminates in a long, artistic wooden bench. The pavilion, offering a direct view of the monastery on the opposite side, is an ideal spot for a picnic. Afterward, you can either return the same way or continue your hike. Dogs are welcome on a leash.
Friedrichsmoor
Sagenhafte Lewitz Walderlebnispfad Friedrichsmoor
The Lewitz is Germany's largest contiguous meadow landscape and lies south of Schwerin. This area, rich in water and forests, has given rise to several legends and stories, which you can experience on the Friedrichsmoor Forest Adventure Trail. On a circular hiking trail of approximately 4 kilometers, you can listen to legends at eleven stations (simply scan the QR code or read them aloud yourself), solve riddles, tame dragons, read animal tracks, or even conjure up a thunderstorm. At the Wishing Tree, you can make a wish and leave a small gift, or you can relax on the forest sofa and read the story of the tinderbox. Allow about 2-3 hours for the hike, especially if you are hiking with children. You will also find several information panels about nature along the way. Alternatively, you can cycle the route. The alternative cycling route is 12 kilometers long and passes a total of 16 legend stations. For both circular routes, the best starting point is Schlossallee 10 in Friedrichsmoor, where there is a parking lot. On special days, the restaurant in Friedrichsmoor Hunting Lodge is also open.
Ganzlin
Wangeliner Garten
The Wangelin Garden near Ganzlin is a paradise for plant lovers. Those who take their time can discover nine themed gardens, such as the cottage garden with its medicinal and useful plants, and the butterfly garden. Our children enjoyed smelling the different flowers and exploring the fruit trees. A particular attraction, however, was the willow labyrinth and the molehill with its dark tunnels. I actually walked through it myself as a child and found it both eerie and exciting. A climbing plant can also be found on the molehill. The garden has a strong artistic character. Small art installations and clay building elements are scattered throughout. Events, workshops, and concerts are also frequently held here. Space for private parties and overnight accommodations are also available. The garden café offers homemade cakes (be sure to try the poppy seed crumble cake) and light meals. A small shop with plants and handmade items completes the offerings. Your dog is welcome to visit the Wangelin Garden on a leash.
Holthusen
Bauernhof-Eis Holthusen
Just outside Schwerin lies the small Holthusen farm-based ice cream parlor. Here, children can play to their hearts' content on the playground, pet and feed some of the animals, and enjoy delicious homemade ice cream and freshly baked cakes daily at reasonable prices. Ice cream can also be purchased to take home. Please understand that bringing your own food and drinks is not permitted. The grounds are free of charge. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor area. The site is largely accessible, but be aware of some uneven terrain. The farm animals include sheep, goats, cows, and pigs. This is a wonderful destination if you are passing through or in the area.
Kuhlen-Wendorf
Bernsteinreiter Erlebnisreiterhof Wendorf
The Bernsteinreiter Adventure Riding Stables in Wendorf, near the Wendorf Castle Hotel near Schwerin, is still a real hidden gem. There, your children can play on the lovingly designed playgrounds, cuddle the friendly farm animals (cuddle entry costs one bag of feed), or spontaneously rent a pony for a walk or ride between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm. Trail rides and pony carriage rides are also available. Creative activities are offered as well. Entry to the adventure riding stables is free. In the beautiful castle, you can enjoy coffee and freshly baked cake. There is also a restaurant and a small snack bar at the information desk. During school holidays, childcare is available and can be booked online in advance. The "Day in the Stables" is for children aged 5 and up. Of course, you can also stay overnight at the Bernstein Castle. It features a children's playroom, a spa area, and saunas. Alternatively, family-friendly holiday apartments and chalets are available. Your own horse and dog are welcome to accompany you to the Bernsteinreiter. The adventure riding stable is ideal as a day trip destination or for a relaxing family holiday.
Lübz
Restaurant Zur Eldenburg
Located directly on the market square is the Zur Eldenburg restaurant. The menu features primarily traditional German dishes, freshly prepared and reasonably priced. There's a dedicated playroom for children. In summer, the large outdoor terrace is a lovely place to relax. The restaurant also includes a hotel.
Ostrich farm Riederfelde
Located near Lübz is the Riederfelde Ostrich Farm. Here you can see the largest flightless bird and explore the protected landscape area "Moor bei Riederfelde" on a short walk. The farm shop offers a variety of ostrich products, including eggs, ostrich meat, and sausages from the farm's own butchery. Ostrich meat is particularly healthy and easily digestible. All products can also be ordered through the online shop. The ostrich farm is open Fridays through Sundays from April to October, and Saturdays from November to March. There is also a campervan site on the premises.
Alter Amtsturm
The ice cream parlor at the "Alter Amtsturm" restaurant serves the most delicious East German-style ice cream ever: a vanilla-chocolate soft serve in a bowl. Two additional flavors are added daily. This delectable ice cream is available from spring to autumn. Incidentally, the restaurant offers traditional German cuisine year-round. They also have children's meals and art supplies. Afterwards, the city park is a lovely place to relax.
Neuer Teich
The 100-hectare "Neuer Teich" recreation area is perhaps one of the more forgotten forests. Yet, this wooded area was extremely popular in the past. Nevertheless, the forest is ideal for walks and short hikes. The "Neuer Teich" is home to the memorial grove, where the victims of the First World War are honored. Here you'll also find a viewing platform from which (on a clear day) you can see as far as Brandenburg. The "Wolfsschlucht" (Wolf's Gorge) is particularly popular with children. The gorge is up to 6 meters deep, with a small stream babbling merrily through it. A narrow path runs alongside the gorge, and numerous bridges zigzag across the stream. Those who prefer a more leisurely pace can take the straight path above the gorge. Here you'll find a nature trail with several information panels about the forest and its inhabitants. In spring, the forest is ablaze with anemones. In autumn, you can go mushroom hunting.
Matzlow
Animationstöpferei Kunst Pöttchen
Have you always wanted to try pottery? Iris Thees's interactive pottery studio, Kunst Pöttchen, invites you to marvel and experiment. Under Iris's guidance, you'll create small works of art in a truly enchanting and playful way. Children (and adults!) will learn how delicate clay can be and how easily it can be shaped by hand. Iris has an incredible talent for interacting with children and transports them to a fairytale world in seconds. The finished bowl is then glazed and fired by Iris in your chosen colors. It takes approximately 4 weeks until your bowl is ready to take home. You can also purchase ready-made, functional ceramics at the studio. The premises are wheelchair accessible, and children with disabilities are welcome. Iris is very patient and her warm, cheerful disposition is instantly contagious. Parking is available on site. The pottery studio is open by appointment only, so please book at least 3-4 months in advance.
Parchim
Café am Wockersee
The small café by Lake Wockersee impresses with its delicious homemade cakes, pastries, and light meals. In summer, the terrace, offering a stunning view of the lake, is open. A few toys are available for children. The café is wheelchair accessible, and free parking is available on site. The same building houses the Wockersee residential home run by the Diaconal Association of Kloster Dobbertin.
Movie Star Parchim
Our absolute favorite cinema in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is the Movie Star Parchim. With three screens, you can watch new blockbusters or relive classic films. The prices are very reasonable; the snack meals with a drink, popcorn, and nachos cost just €12.00. The staff is always very attentive and courteous. There is free parking in front of the cinema.
Platschow
Elefantenhof Platschow
At the Platschow Elephant Sanctuary, circus elephants find a permanent home. Here, the magnificent gray creatures can be admired and fed up close, and elephant rides (for an extra charge) are also offered. Some circus elephants have even been reunited after years apart. Observing the elephants from this distance is truly impressive. A feeding bowl filled with treats can be purchased separately. The spacious sanctuary is also home to goats, geese, sea lions, camels, zebras, and many other animals. Various animal shows take place several times a day. The grounds also feature trampolines, bouncy castles, playground equipment, and a straw play area. Snack bars and a small shop complete the offerings. The elephant sanctuary is wheelchair accessible, and dogs are welcome on a leash. Parking is free. During the summer holidays, the sanctuary is quite busy, so it's best to arrive right when it opens or visit after 3 pm when it's a bit quieter. Be sure to bring sunscreen, as there is very little shade. Only cash payments are accepted at the elephant enclosure.
Plau am See
Kultur- und Informationszentrum Karower Meiler
The Karower Meiler Cultural and Information Center impresses with its lovingly designed permanent exhibition about the nature park region. There are a multitude of interesting discoveries to be made. We were particularly impressed by the star chamber with its Milky Way display and the extensive collection of native animal specimens. There's also plenty for children to explore. Various interactive stations invite participation, including a wooden marble run depicting the path of the wood ant, and an animal-friendly workshop with painting and crafting materials. Outdoors, there's a water playground in a large sandbox, a pond, and a kitchen garden. The Karower Meiler also offers a shop with regional products, unique gift ideas, and ice cream. There's also a vending machine for regional products outside. Please note: Only cash payments are accepted in the shop and at the vending machine! Guided tours with the ranger, discovery tours with the Junior Ranger, events, and festivals are offered regularly. Admission to the Karower Meiler is free! The facility is also wheelchair accessible. The Cultural and Information Center is a wonderful and entertaining destination for the whole family.
Barefoot Experience & Educational Trail Plau
The Plau Barefoot Adventure & Learning Trail is somewhat hidden away on Ziegeleiweg near Klüschenberg. Along its nearly 2 kilometers, you can discover nature at 51 stations and walk barefoot over various surfaces. What makes this barefoot park special is its location in the heart of nature, leading past wetlands. A small rest area is also available. There are three deeper pools you can walk through (please note: the pools are at least knee-deep). Two of the pools are missing handrails, making entry and exit a bit adventurous. The deeper pools can also be easily walked around. Since the path runs alongside water and through a small forest, mosquitoes are more prevalent. However, mosquito repellent is available for you in the shoe rack. Be sure to bring a towel to dry your feet after washing them. The barefoot trail is open daily from March to October, weather permitting. Please note: cash only.
Suckow
Alpaka Ranch Ruhner Berge
If you're traveling on the A24, we recommend a short stop in Suckow, where you'll find the Ruhner Berge Alpaca and Llama Ranch. This adventure farm offers numerous outdoor play areas, trampolines, a bouncy castle, and several animals. Camel and pony rides are also available (not included in the entrance fee). You can also book an alpaca trek at the ranch in advance. After the trek, the alpacas roam freely around the grounds. The small circus show in the afternoon is particularly recommended. The owners originally come from the circus, and their enthusiasm is clearly evident in the performance. The ranch also has a snack bar and a small souvenir shop. Dogs are not allowed on the premises.
Wittenburg
MehlWelten Museum
Located directly off the A24 motorway is the Flour Worlds Museum. The museum explores the significance and development of humanity's most important staple food. In various rooms, visitors can discover the world of flour and marvel at the world's largest collection of flour sacks. Over 3,600 flour sacks from more than 140 countries are on display. A particularly impressive exhibit is the almost lifelike replica of Ötzi, the Iceman, who was discovered in 1991 in the glacial ice of the Ötztal Alps and had two individual grains of wheat tucked into the fur of his coat. Children can explore the museum in a playful way. Each room features small discovery attractions that invite them to marvel and try things out. A free audio guide is available for visiting the exhibition rooms, and a children's audio guide is planned for the future. The museum is wheelchair accessible and free for regular visitors. Guided tours are also available for a fee. The museum is open every Sunday from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm year-round. Alt Schwerin
AGRONEUM Alt Schwerin
At the AGRONEUM Alt Schwerin, you can experience the development of Mecklenburg's estate and agricultural history from 1848 onwards. Gain insights into the crafts of that era. Besides historic tractors, steam engines, and agricultural aircraft, unique, handcrafted GDR-era items are also on display. The spacious grounds not only invite you to marvel but also offer plenty of room for children to play. The lovingly designed playgrounds are particularly noteworthy. There's also a petting zoo with goats in the open-air museum. The restaurant serves traditional home-style cooking and delicious GDR dishes. There's even a small play table for children. A farm shop with a separate play area completes the charming museum grounds. Those who want to see more can explore the village, which features seven original historic buildings. The admission ticket grants access to both the museum grounds and the village buildings. Special events are offered monthly, such as the popular vintage car and tractor meet in August. Blacksmithing workshops are also available on certain dates. The grounds are partially wheelchair accessible. Children up to 5 years old get in free. The family ticket is especially great, valid for 2 adults and one child (each additional child from the same family can visit the museum for free). Dogs are welcome (extra charge) and the large car park is free.
Jabel
Wisentreservat Dammerower Werder
The Damerower Werder Bison Reserve is located on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin. Here, herds of up to 40 bison roam freely. The nature reserve is also home to a small herd of red deer. At the bison and red deer enclosure, you can observe the animals and stroll along the forest adventure trail. Numerous play stations for children and several information panels about nature can be found here. The many artfully crafted wooden benches are particularly charming and invite you to linger. The most beautiful spot is right on the shores of Lake Kölpin, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the water and observe water birds. There is also an accessible alternative nature trail, but be aware of natural hills and inclines. The reserve is so vast that seeing animals at the enclosure requires a good deal of luck. Feeding takes place twice a day (the bison at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, the red deer immediately after the 11:00 AM feeding), where you can experience the animals up close and enjoy a great view of the feeding areas from the viewing platforms. During feeding time, you'll also learn some interesting facts about the animals. The bison reserve also features a lovely forest playground with a treetop adventure course. In addition, there's a small information center, a forest shop with regional products, and a restaurant where you can choose from savory delicacies (the wild boar curry sausage is really good), cakes, and ice cream. Dogs are welcome on a leash. Children up to 12 years old get in free. Parking is free. The bison reserve is perfect for a short day trip or a stopover; you can expect to spend about 2-3 hours there.

Zislow
Pfad der schlafenden Steine
The "Path of the Sleeping Stones" is particularly well-suited for families who enjoy hiking. The 7 km long, signposted circular route leads through forests and directly along Lake Plau. Along the way, you'll occasionally encounter some special "sleeping" stones and numerous stone monuments (stone circles, stone tombs, sacrificial stones). The highlight is the observation tower, from which you can enjoy a fantastic panoramic view. Our kids especially enjoyed the fitness trail and the lovely playground right by Lake Plau. There are plenty of nice picnic spots, or you can grab a bite to eat at the "Konsum" in Zislow (the circular route passes right by it). Dogs are welcome on the trail, provided they are kept on a leash.
Pfad der
Wald- und Baumgeister
Another truly lovely children's hiking trail can also be found in Zislow. The 8 km long "Path of the Forest and Tree Spirits" leads past the beautiful "Großer Pätschsee" (Great Pätschsee) and along the shore of Lake Plau (the trail also passes two campsites). The path to and around Lake Pätschsee is particularly exciting, as there are many charmingly designed little and large forest spirits to discover. The landscape around the lake is breathtakingly beautiful, and our kids had a blast searching for the many forest faces. The rest of the trail along Lake Plau, while very idyllic with a great view of Plau, might become a bit boring for kids because the spirits are absent there. If you're only interested in the spirit hunt, you should shorten the loop around Lake Pätschsee. A small playground can be found in Zislow right next to the Forest and Tree Spirits Trail. Two more modern playgrounds can be found at the "Konsum" (a local shop) or directly at the harbor. Dogs are welcome on the circular trail.

The grounds also include the Winkelkraut Wild Herb Farm, which offers special activities daily. The idyllic wild herb garden invites you to slow down, and the regional shop offers organic food and handcrafted products. Whether for a day trip or an overnight stay under a breathtaking starry sky, a visit to the Wild Herb Farm and the Honeycomb Hostel is definitely worthwhile. School groups are also welcome and can participate in various experiential activities. It is recommended to bring mosquito and tick repellent.
Damshagen
Fossileum Kussow
Right next to the Stone Age village of Kussow, the Fossileum Kussow, located in the Atelierhaus, invites you on a small but delightful journey into the past. In the large exhibition hall, a lovingly curated fossil display awaits you, featuring well-labeled finds from several European countries – including some rare specimens that offer fascinating insights into life millions of years ago. With a bit of luck, you might even be able to purchase some of the fossils – a special souvenir for collectors of all ages. Admission is free, and the Fossileum is wheelchair accessible.
Steinzeitdorf Kussow
Just a few kilometers from Grevesmühlen lies the Stone Age Village of Kussow – a somewhat dated but absolutely worthwhile destination, especially for families with children. Equipped with a flashlight (which you can get at the ticket office), you can explore authentically reconstructed Stone Age houses, discover a small herb garden, a field with heritage grains, and learn a lot about life in the Stone Age. Children and adults can also try archery on the grounds! There's also a small playground and some heritage breeds of farm animals to discover. Those who want to do even more can try their hand at pottery or weaving and create a small, handmade souvenir (not included in the admission price). You should plan on spending about two hours at the open-air museum. A small Stone Age shop completes the experience. Your dog is welcome on a leash. The admission prices are very family-friendly and reasonable.
Grevesmühlen
Piraten Action OpenAir-Theater
Grevesmühlen presents an outstanding open-air pirate action theater that rivals larger open-air productions. The market square will get you in the mood for the show, where you can browse the pirate shop. Before the performance, you can fortify yourself with fish sandwiches, sausages, and fries. Please note that only cash payments are accepted at the food stalls. From June 19th to August 29th, 2026, you can experience the first episode, "The Pirates' Treasure," of the Captain Joshua Flint Saga. No prior knowledge is required to dive right into the action. The stage covers over 9,000 square meters and will thrill you with ships, boats, horses, carriages, muzzle-loading weapons, cannons, and numerous special effects. Over 60 actors contribute to the production and work together brilliantly. You can expect plenty of stunts, sword fights, and music. The proximity to the stage is particularly impressive, allowing you to easily follow the action and the actors. A little tip: bring blankets and cushions for yourselves. In case of rain, you can purchase rain ponchos in the shop. It might be a good idea to bring ear protection for children, as the cannons are quite loud. Every Wednesday is Family Day, when adults in a family pay the child's price in all categories. We recommend this show for children aged 5 and up. The play lasts 2.5 hours, including an intermission. There is a large free parking lot and accessible seating in the theater.
Gartenbau Wiencke mit Erlebnisscheune, Hofladen und Café

The grounds also feature an adventure barn with a café and a farm shop offering regional and fresh products. The cozy café offers various breakfast options as well as homemade cakes and pastries. Children can enjoy themselves in a small play area, while animals such as goats, chickens, guinea pigs, and rabbits can be discovered on the farm. With a bit of luck, you might even get to pet the animals. The accessible adventure barn can also be rented for private events, and ample parking is available directly in front of the building.

Citizens' Park in the Köppernitz Valley
The beautiful Bürgerpark (Citizens' Park) is located on the former grounds of the 2001 State Garden Show. Connected to the Köppernitz Valley, it boasts numerous lawns, ponds, and a small wooded area. The 37-meter-high observation tower (free of charge) offers a stunning view of Wismar and the surrounding area. A circular path of approximately 2.5 kilometers winds through the park. Occasionally, events are held there. The park also features a beach volleyball court, a hedge maze, and a barn converted into a playground. Wismar Zoo is also located within the Bürgerpark. The paths are generally accessible for people with disabilities. A dog park further enhances the park's appeal. A visit to the deciduous forest directly adjacent to the Köppernitz River is also highly recommended. With luck, you might spot some deer.
Café Glücklich
Café Glücklich is located at Schweinsbrücke 7. In a cozy atmosphere, you can enjoy delicious cakes and pastries, a fantastic breakfast, or savory treats. The interior isn't very spacious, but there's also seating in the small courtyard garden and in front of the café. A small play table with books and coloring materials is available inside for the youngest visitors. Café Glücklich is self-service; you order at the counter and then return your dishes. Unfortunately, the entrance is not wheelchair accessible. However, when the weather is nice, you can sit outside and enjoy the lively street scene (also a great option for dog owners). At Café Glücklich, you can also purchase small souvenirs and, of course, takeaway food is available.
Old Port
At the old harbor of the Hanseatic city of Wismar, you can experience the city's long seafaring tradition. Alongside several boats, passenger ships, and listed buildings, a typical Hanseatic cog is moored. You can regularly take a trip on the Baltic Sea aboard this ship, or in the summer, enjoy a pirate-themed cruise with your children. There's also a new, larger playground in the harbor area. Fresh fish is regularly available directly from the fishing boats. Numerous cafes, restaurants, a museum, and small shops for browsing complete the offerings. A large parking garage (with public restrooms) and several larger parking lots are located right by the harbor. The harbor is largely accessible for people with disabilities.
Reaturant RIALTO
This Italian restaurant, located right on the Old Harbor, boasts a beautiful and stylish interior. In summer, the outdoor area, with its open tables and individual garden bubbles, is a wonderful oasis for relaxing, meeting friends, and enjoying delicious Italian specialties. Reservations are highly recommended. Dogs are only allowed in the outdoor area. The harbor playground is located directly in front of the restaurant, and the terrace offers a great view of the public play area. Unfortunately, the restaurant is only partially wheelchair accessible.
Hotel Denkmal 13
Hotel Denkmal 13 is particularly appealing to romantics, couples, and those seeking a short break. The unique historical ambiance lends this listed building a truly special charm. Where else can you boast a four-poster bed with a bathtub right next to it and a glass shower completing the room's aesthetic? Only the toilet has its own small, separate room within the suite. Breakfast is served at your table in the dining room and offers everything you could wish for to start your day perfectly. Unfortunately, there are only a few parking spaces available on-site. However, the large parking lots at the harbor are just a short walk away. Dogs are not permitted in the hotel, and it is not wheelchair accessible.
Seebrücke
The pier is located in the Seebad Wendorf district. At 330 meters long, it is the longest pier on the Mecklenburg Baltic coast. Right next to it is Wendorf Beach, a well-maintained natural beach area and the only beach area in Wismar. A children's playground is also located here. Behind the beach is a café with a mini-golf course and public restrooms. The beach area is particularly lovely for children, who can play in the clear, very shallow water. It only gets deeper a considerable distance out.
Betonschiff vor Redentin
The concrete ship off Redentin in Wismar Bay is a 300-ton concrete vessel of the "Seeleichter Wiking Motor" type. The ship was never fully completed and only ever served as a temporary storage facility for ship chandlers. In 1962, it was intended to serve as a breakwater in Redentin Bay. After a storm, it was driven onto a sandbank at its current location. It developed several leaks and sank in the shallow water. The plan was to remove the ship, but this was abandoned due to the excessive cost. The shipwreck can only be viewed from a distance, as the shoreline is a nature reserve and access is prohibited.
Klütz
Schloss Bothmer
Bothmer Castle is a little piece of England in Mecklenburg. It belonged to Count Bothmer, who lived at 10 Downing Street at the height of his career as the first Prime Minister. Until 1945, the Counts of Bothmer resided in the castle, which was modeled after a genuine English country house. Today, it houses a museum. A free audio guide is available at the ticket office. Guided tours and interactive tours for children aged 7 and up are also offered. A digital puzzle tour leads through the castle gardens. Parents can borrow a wagon filled with games for the park. A playground is also located on the grounds. The castle includes a shop selling English souvenirs and an orangery. The castle is wheelchair accessible, and special tours are available for blind and visually impaired visitors. Children under 18 are admitted free of charge. Dogs are only permitted in the park and on the grounds.
Rehna
Kloster Rehna
Three hundred years ago, a women's monastery existed in Rehna. After its dissolution in 1552, only the church, the cloister, and a few rooms of the monastery complex remain of the once-imposing complex. A visit here will transport you back to the Middle Ages and allow you to experience daily life in the monastery during its heyday. An audio guide leads you through the exhibition rooms. We especially recommend the Children's audio guide featuring the little, immortal bat, Mona. Mona enchantingly guides you through the rooms, recounting exciting and amusing stories from the monastery's time. We highly recommend the children's audio guide for adults as well. The audio guide is included in the admission price and should definitely be used. The museum features several interactive stations, and the little bat accompanies you on every information panel with riddles, scavenger hunts, and interesting facts. The newly landscaped monastery garden, with its own apiary and Kneipp pool, is particularly beautiful. Several events take place at the monastery throughout the year. The monastery museum and the church are wheelchair accessible. To overcome differences in elevation, ramps are provided. The monastery offers guided tours for blind and visually impaired people, as well as for kindergarten groups and school classes, by prior arrangement. Children up to 18 years of age receive free admission. The museum is open from the beginning of March to the end of October, Tuesdays through Sundays, and on public holidays. The monastery café, with a wide selection of cakes and pastries, and the Moordiele natural products shop, offering a variety of regional natural products, are located directly opposite the monastery. Dogs are not permitted in the museum.
Klostercafé und Naturladen Moordiele
The Moordiele monastery café and natural food shop are located directly opposite Rehna Monastery. Here you can find regional products and charming souvenirs. The wide selection of homemade cakes and tarts is particularly appealing, but they also offer ice cream and waffles. The café has limited seating inside, but you can also sit outside in the courtyard. The café and shop are not fully wheelchair accessible.
Denkmalsberg Kreuz von Rehna
The memorial hill "Kreuz von Rehna" (Rehna Cross) can be reached on foot via the Rehnaer Weg path. The hill is situated amidst nature and offers a fantastic view of Rehna and the surrounding area. It's about a 15-minute walk from the school to the hill. The cross was erected in 1935 and commemorates the war dead of the region.
Stellshagen
Mäuseturm
Between Stellshagen and Bothmer Castle lies the Mouse Tower – a ruined tower in a field. Information about the tower is scarce, leading to the formation of several mysterious tales. The ruins are located in the Klützer Winkel region and can be reached via a narrow path across a field. From the hilltop, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the surrounding landscape. Caution: Stones may fall from the ruins! You can reach the Mouse Tower on foot from Stellshagen Manor, the Stellshagen Ponds area (where there is a small parking area for hikers), or from Bothmer Castle.
Hotel Gutshaus Stellshagen
Nestled amidst meadows and fields lies the organic and wellness hotel Gutshaus Stellshagen. Time seems to stand still, and a stay here is utterly relaxing. The aim is to connect with nature and completely unwind. You'll be hard-pressed to find a television or Wi-Fi. Nevertheless, the hotel offers every comfort. A complimentary daily program (e.g., yoga, meditation, and other events) is offered to guests. The TAO health center offers a wide range of naturopathic treatments, and the Swedish-red sauna house boasts three saunas and a natural bathing pond. The restaurant and café serve exclusively vegetarian dishes, emphasizing organic quality and catering to food intolerances. Cakes and pastries come from the hotel's own organic bakery in Damshagen. Gutshaus Stellshagen is primarily geared towards adults. For children, there's a small playground (with a ping-pong table), board games to borrow, and a small play area in the dining room. Stellshagen is just a short drive from the Baltic Sea, and several hiking trails pass by the hotel (bicycles can be rented directly at the hotel). Klütz, with Bothmer Castle, is within walking distance. The hotel also features a small shop. Dogs are welcome and must be announced at the time of booking. The hotel has limited accessibility for people with disabilities.
Ostseebad Boltenhagen
Ostseebad Boltenhagen
The Baltic Sea resort of Boltenhagen is one of Germany's oldest seaside resorts and boasts a 5-kilometer-long, stone-free sandy beach. A dog beach is located at beach access point 1, extending to the Klützer Bach stream and along the natural beach in Redewisch to the steep bank. Another dog beach is located in section 22. Beach access points 19 and 20 are wheelchair accessible. Three nudist beach sections complete the offerings. A visitor's tax is payable for beach access from mid-May to mid-September. The attractive beach promenade invites visitors to stroll. Along the central promenade, you'll find numerous shops and restaurants, playgrounds, a miniature golf course, a climbing park, and a bandstand with several public events throughout the year. Public restrooms are also located along the beach promenade.
Landkreis Rostock
Here are some of the best day trip ideas for the Rostock district. Neighboring districts are Ludwigslust-Parchim, Nordwestmecklenburg, Vorpommern-Rügen and Mecklenburgische Seenplatte.
Güstrow
Wildlife Park MV
The beautiful, expansive wildlife park in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern boasts numerous open enclosures where visitors can observe not only deer, goats, and sheep up close, but also canaries, guinea fowl, owls, and many other animals. A true highlight is the wooden bridge and climbing trail that leads over the predator enclosures. However, this trail is only suitable for sure-footed visitors and can be challenging in some places. For those seeking more action, there are many lovingly designed playgrounds where children can really let loose. For quieter moments, a stroll across wooden bridges through the moor and along the expansive meadows is ideal. Here, you can always find a quiet spot to fully immerse yourself in nature. In the aqua tunnel and at the fish ponds, native fish swim about. Here, you have a direct view into the pond and, with a bit of luck, can even look the carp in the eye. We were particularly impressed by the waterfall system that meanders through parts of the park. Four bistros/snack bars are available for refreshments, or you can bring your own picnic – there are lovely and unique seating areas throughout the wildlife park. Dogs are welcome in the park, and parking is free. Although there are accessible paths in the park, be prepared for uneven terrain.
Kühlungsborn
Ostseebad Kühlungsborn
In the Baltic Sea resort of Kühlungsborn, you'll find a long beach and Germany's longest promenade, stretching almost 4 kilometers. Along the promenade, you'll find numerous playgrounds, snack bars, restaurants, and public restrooms. There are a total of 28 access points to the beach, so you can easily find your favorite spot. Whether you prefer a bikini, the dog beach, accessible areas, or nudist beaches, everyone will find their perfect spot. Free volleyball courts are also available on the beach. Kühlungsborn is very popular in the summer. Parking can be difficult and expensive. We recommend the Seebrücke parking garage on Rudolf-Breitscheid-Straße. It can also be challenging to get a table at a restaurant in the evening, as many are booked months in advance. Therefore, it's advisable to grab something from a snack bar and enjoy the sunset on the beach. Beach chairs can be rented on-site or online. Please note that a tourist tax is levied year-round! Children under 18 have free access to the beach.
Robbershagen
Karls Erlebnis-Dorf
Karls Adventure Village in Rövershagen is definitely worth a day trip, offering an exciting experience from morning till night without a single dull moment. Our tip: if you're visiting Karls with children, be sure to buy a day ticket. This allows you unlimited access to all the rides and the ice world! The cool roller coasters, numerous carousels, the "Shed-Shed" aquarium, and the giant slide will delight both young and old. There's also an ice world that changes annually. The free demonstrations in the workshops and the Karls mini-disco in the late afternoon round out the experience. You'll go home exhausted but full of unforgettable memories – and don't forget to take some Strawberry Dream jam with you! :) For a quieter visit, we recommend coming during the week, ideally during the school term in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. By the way, it's also possible to stay overnight at Karls! The adventure village is barrier-free and dogs are also welcome.

Here are some of the best excursion ideas for the Vorpommern-Rügen district. Neighboring districts include Rostock,
Mecklenburgische Seenplatte and Vorpommern-Greifswald.
Ostseebad Wustrow
Seebrücke & Strand
The Baltic Sea resort of Wustrow, with its very long stretch of beach, offers a true paradise for beachgoers. Thanks to the gently sloping water, the beach is also well-suited for children. Barrier-free access can be found at Beach access point 5, where the pier is also located. During the season, when the lifeguard tower is staffed, it is also possible to reach the water with a wheelchair equipped with air-filled tires. Assistance is always available from the lifeguard tower team. From the beginning of October to the end of April, the entire beach is open to dogs; during the season, the designated dog beach is located between beach sections 8 and 9. The well-maintained beach is free of charge at all times. Several events and concerts take place on the beach throughout the year. From the 240-meter-long pier, there is a fantastic panoramic view of the cliffs stretching all the way to Warnemünde.
Piraten Spielplatz
Right next to the Wustrow open-air cinema is the pirate playground. Here you can go on a treasure hunt and board the large wooden pirate ship. This lovely themed playground offers plenty of space for children up to 10 years old to romp and explore. A smaller pirate ship for younger guests is also available on the playground. Beach access point 5 and various snack bars are within easy reach. Our tip: try a waffle on a stick.
Ribnitz-Damgarten
Bernsteinreiter Erlebnisreiterhöfe Hirschburg
The Bernsteinreiter Adventure Riding Stables in Hirschburg are a paradise for horse lovers. With over 200 horses and ponies of various breeds, the farm leaves little to be desired. Your children can let loose on the many playgrounds (including indoor ones) and pet the adorable farm animals. In the creative workshop, they can enjoy activities such as painting horseshoes or polishing amber. Ponies can be rented daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for walks, rides, or independent carriage rides without prior booking. Guided trail rides and riding lessons are available upon request. The horse shows, which take place every Thursday during school holidays in the indoor riding arena, are particularly impressive. It's definitely worth buying tickets for the 90-minute show. Food and drinks are also available at the riding stables. The Bernsteinreiter Farm in Hirschburg is an ideal destination for day trips and also offers family-friendly vacation apartments and riding holidays without parents. Free parking is available directly at the farm.
Natural treasure trove
This private natural treasure trove, featuring a gemstone and amber center, is still a bit of a hidden gem. The absolutely beautiful exhibition of the private collection is nestled in nature. Across 10 exhibition areas, you'll find over 60,000 exhibits. You can admire amber and gemstones from over 70 countries, explore the local wildlife, navigate a crawl tunnel, examine pearls, shells, and minerals, marvel at butterflies and insects, and discover fossils and over 250 species of fungi. In summer, the paradise garden, with its many perennials and roses, invites you to linger. The large museum shop is perfect for browsing and being enchanted by the vast array of stones. Free parking is available on-site, and dogs are welcome. Children under 3 years old are admitted free of charge. The museum shop and the two exhibitions on the ground floor and first floor are wheelchair accessible. The exhibition on the second floor (shells, snails, pearls) is only accessible via stairs. Guided tours are free for groups of 10 or more adults.
Naturpfad
Right next to the nature treasure trove is the nature trail of the Ribnitz Great Moor nature reserve and the Ribnitz-Damgarten municipal forest. This free trail offers a wealth of information about the local flora and fauna. Various tree sculptures invite you to dream and let your imagination run wild. The well-organized nature trail can be ideally combined with a visit to the Forest and Moor Information Center. From May to October, the center features a small, free exhibition about the regional landscape. There are several display cases, aquariums, and showcases, as well as live observations of nesting birds and bats. With luck, you might even witness a feeding demonstration. Guided nature tours can be booked for a fee.
